The Verandah House, a modern retreat in Clyde Hill, WA, was designed to balance profound openness with quiet refuge.
Organized around a peaceful internal courtyard, this home features a continuous verandah that extends the living spaces outward, capturing panoramic views of Lake Washington and the Seattle skyline.
The solid grounding of board-formed concrete and weathered steel beautifully contrasts with the organic warmth of our authentic yakisugi cladding, creating a material palette that feels both elemental and refined.

Meet the net-positive Komorebi House, named for the dappled light thrown across its facade.
Elevated to protect the natural landscape, the home leverages passive energy strategies to generate more energy than it consumes. It’s as intentional as it is beautiful, regulating itself with the changing seasons to reduce reliance on electric systems and ensure its long lifespan.
Featured on both the interior and exterior, our yakisugi embodies its enduring balance of form, function, and reverence for nature.

Featured on @thelocalproject: a Japanese-inspired home in Cupertino, CA, that explores how architecture can create moments of retreat while remaining deeply connected to its surroundings.
“Selected for its rich tonal quality and evolving surface, the [Nakamoto Forestry Gendai® yakisugi] cladding anchors the project in a palette that is at once restrained and expressive. ‘We were drawn to the subtle variation in the material – it’s not a flat black, but something that shifts with light and time,’ [principal of SHED Thomas] Schaer says.
“’It’s rare to find a material that delivers on both performance and beauty without compromise. This allowed us to maintain a clear design intent without introducing unnecessary complexity.’”

An “indoor-outdoor masterpiece” in Hillsborough, California, according to @sunsetmag.
Designed by @aleckwilsonarchitects and @stratainc and built by @morosoconstruction, this ADU is in direct conversation with the adjacent Tudor-style main residence.
“We chose shou sugi ban siding as a complement to the dark painted timbers of a classic Tudor,” says Aleck. “The accent stone wall at the back of the pavilion space is complementary to the coloring of the stucco infill of the existing Tudor home. The simple gable forms of the ADU mirrored those of the Tudor main house.”

We sat down with Jim Parker of Elemental Building Solutions for a candid conversation about building in one of the most demanding environments of the Pacific Northwest.
On Orcas Island, wind, moisture, and corrosive salt air put every material—especially cladding—to the test. While engineered materials are often positioned as the default for durability, Jim points to yakisugi’s natural resilience as a time-tested solution.
