A modern transformation in the heart of Vermont.
@mbarchdesign worked closely with the owners of a former carriage house—once used as guest accommodations—to reimagine it as their primary residence. With the help of @mountainbuilders, the team preserved the structure’s integrity while introducing modern elements, including bold charred yakisugi siding by @nakamotoforestry.

Thinking about yakisugi for your home? Here are 3 essential things to know before you choose ⤵️
1️⃣Weathering. Yakisugi weathers differently depending on its environment. Factors like sun, rain, and humidity all play a role. While it’s not an exact science, we provide predictive weathering patterns for each product and finish to help you make informed decisions.
2️⃣ Installation Matters. Yakisugi is naturally rot, pest, UV, and fire resistant, but even the highest quality materials need proper installation to perform their best. That’s why we provide detailed installation manuals and offer expert consultations to ensure you’re set up for success.
3️⃣ True Yakisugi vs. Imitations: True yakisugi, made from Japanese cedar (sugi), stands apart in both appearance and performance. Sugi’s harder latewood makes the charred soot layer more durable, while its high porosity allows for rapid drying, superior rot resistance, and thermal efficiency—keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer. Unlike other woods, sugi remains dimensionally stable during the high-temperature charring process.
Choosing the right yakisugi can make all the difference. Visit the link in our bio for more resources, like our “Find Your Match” wood selector quiz.
