Gendai – Unoiled
Exterior
DESCRIPTION
Gendai® yakisugi “shou sugi ban” siding. The top layer of delicate soot is lightly brushed off, leaving a smooth, consistent, and dark surface, suitable for exterior applications. Gendai does not need to be finished with an oil for wood longevity since it is heat-treated, but the wood will patina more quickly without an oil prefinish. Available burned both faces (S4S) for fencing or louver applications. Delivered ready to install.
FINISH DETAILS
The yakisugi “shou sugi ban” heat treatment process leaves the wood naturally resistant to pests, moisture, and fire. The basis of design of yakisugi is that the heat treatment makes a coating unnecessary. Leaving the wood unoiled allows it to weather naturally, according to the local climate. This is a great option for owners who appreciate the organic, natural beauty of wood and want to savor it as a living, changing finish. Unoiled siding can always be oiled in the future to add color or consistency.

MAINTENANCE
This product is designed to be installed and enjoyed for a lifetime without an oil finish and is delivered ready to install. It can, however, have an oil finish applied any time in the future if desired.
Historically, unoiled yakisugi is the most common in vernacular Japanese construction. Yakisugi should never be scraped, sanded or pressure washed. A very weak TSP or soap solution, neutral pH cleaner, or simply clean water, can be applied with a cloth or soft brush to wash off pollen, dirt, dust, etc.
Exterior siding should be hosed down regularly to keep it clean and appearance fresh. For more detailed installation and maintenance guidance, see our Installation Guidelines.
