DESCRIPTION
Our Pika-Pika® yakisugi “shou sugi ban” products receive a double brushing to remove most loose soot. This reveals a textured wood surface with striped grain patterns. We then apply two coats of our plant-derived architectural grade alkyd oil prefinish prior to shipment. This combination is suitable for both exterior siding and interior paneling installations.

Unoiled
Yakisugi “shou sugi ban” siding and paneling. Wire-brushed and textured surface. Most of the soot is removed, revealing a striped pattern. Suitable for exterior and interior applications. We recommend applying a finish before installation to prevent sooty fingerprints.
Patina Scale: 8

CONSIDERATIONS
- Be careful of leaving sooty fingerprints when handling Pika-Pika before it is coated.
- Soot can be cleaned off with a dry paint brush or compressed air.
- We recommend applying and drying oil stains or coatings in a horizontal orientation before installation.
- If coating is applied after installation, be sure to back brush the siding or paneling for an even finish.
- Soot residue, caking, and blemishing (especially along board edges) are all common with this product.

MAINTENANCE
This product is designed to be installed and enjoyed for a lifetime without an oil finish and is delivered ready to install. It can, however, have an oil finish applied any time in the future if desired. Historically, unoiled yakisugi is the most common in vernacular Japanese construction. Yakisugi should never be scraped, sanded or pressure washed. A very weak TSP or soap solution, neutral pH cleaner, or simply clean water can be applied with a cloth or soft brush to wash off pollen, dirt, and dust. Exterior siding should be hosed down regularly to keep the appearance fresh and clean.

Minimum order volume is 400 square feet for the order’s first line item. Standard lead time is 2-3 weeks PO to ship-ready, then add 1-2 weeks for shipping. Please order at least 5 weeks before needed at site, and note that lead time can go up if we are oversold on specific items.
