Our Pika-Pika® yakisugi “shou sugi ban” products are first burned deeply black. Two rounds of wire brushing remove all loose earlywood soot from the softer spring growth rings, leaving the late wood as contrasting burnt ridges. It is a topographic, textured surface that follows the wood grain. We then hand-grade Pika-Pika products after surfacing to achieve a consistent blend of heartwood and sapwood.
Pika-Pika can either be installed with or without an oil prefinish.

Can we use Pika-Pika with the polyurethane factory coating on an exterior application?

Is yakisugi “shou sugi ban” suitable for use on furniture? Our lumber products are all of Japanese origin and are unaffected by Canadian import duties from the US. All North American orders ship from inventory stored at our US facility within two weeks. Any tariff costs are included in our published pricing and you will not be charged additional taxes (aside from your GST or HST).
