DESCRIPTION

Hinoki cypress wood (Chamaecyparis obtusa) is an aromatic and rot-resistant lumber species native to central and southern Japan. With an even blonde color and clear tight grain, hinoki has versatile uses in both interior and exterior applications, whether finished with oil or left uncoated.

The wood’s straight grain, light color, and luxe planed sheen make it an ideal aesthetic material for wall, floor, and ceiling surfaces. At the same time, it demonstrates strength and flexion resistance against earthquakes, and has been utilized historically for pagoda and other sacred building structural timbers. Hinoki wood is revered for its aromatic compounds (including alpha-terpineol and limonene) which provide its incense-like fragrance while also serving as natural defenses against insects.

FAQs

What is special about hinoki cypress wood?

Hinoki wood has desirable structural, appearance, durability, and machining properties, all optimal for construction and cosmetic lumber. Its aromatic compounds give it a pleasant incense-like fragrance that has been shown to help with relaxation and mood improvement. Hinoki grows slowly, requiring timberland to be intentionally managed with stepped harvest cycles. This results in high quality timber and healthy forests.

What is a moulder blank?

A moulder blank is premium rough sawn lumber designed to be precision machined for specific applications—such as flooring or paneling, cabinetry, furniture, or another architectural millwork. Every municipal region in North America has any number of millwork shops. It is common for contractors to have a profile custom moulded with an agreed knife set. There is generally a one-time knife setup fee, plus a lineal foot charge.

Why can’t Nakamoto Forestry mould hinoki to our specified profile?

Hinoki wood must be moulded soon before installation due to pitch bleed. The boards will stick together during storage after surfacing. Custom moulding is best accomplished locally for expedited service and specific moulder knife set approval. Nakamoto Forestry hinoki lumber is only available in one rough dimension; no custom orders.
