Suyaki® Unoiled

Exterior

Charred, unbrushed, and unoiled yakisugi “shou sugi ban” is as traditional as it gets. Unoiled Suyaki® provides a visual and cultural benchmark for our products. Used mostly for exterior applications, though it has also been used in Japan for interior ceilings as an air purifier. This is a great option for owners who appreciate the natural beauty of wood and siding with a unique, ever-changing patina. Leaving the charred wood unoiled allows it to naturally weather in response to the local climate. The yakisugi heat treatment process hardens and protects the siding against pests, moisture, and fire.

Considerations Toggle icon
  • The original yakisugi “shou sugi ban” siding, the way it’s been done for hundreds of years.
  • Arguably the most beautiful black color there is in architecture.
  • The most fire-resistant natural wood siding that we are aware of.
  • Soot layer erosion will happen over time; this is the nature of this very traditional material. Not suitable for high-traffic applications.
  • Handle with care. Soot residue, caking, and blemishing (especially along board edges) are all common with this product.
  • Installers and the jobsite will get covered in soot dust during installation.

Patina Scale: 2

Patina Scale Graphic rating 2 indicating More Colorfast
The Patina Scale has been developed by Nakamoto Forestry to approximate how its products will weather over time—from 0 (“less patina/more color longevity”) to 10 (“less color longevity/more patina”). However, every product weathers at a different rate due to local conditions, and the Patina Scale is intended as general guidance only, and is solely for informational purposes. Nakamoto Forestry makes no guarantees, representations, or warranties, express or implied, regarding the appearance or color longevity of its products after installation.
