Wakugi are traditional Japanese hand-forged carbon steel siding nails distinguished by their longevity, unique head shape, and patina aesthetic. The head is characteristically bent and installed proud of the wood surface, and ferrous streaking is considered desirable.
The prominent nail heads are a key design element. When Wakugi are installed at regular intervals, the aligned nail heads create a rhythm across the wood surface. This visual pattern reflects the aesthetic principles found in traditional Japanese architecture.
Over time, the steel develops a protective rust, which may leave vertical streaks down the walls. While rust is generally considered undesirable, it plays an important role with Wakugi. As the specialty steel rusts, the Wakugi slightly expands, developing a shielding layer that results in extreme durability. Combined with the square shank of the nail, this natural process helps the nail grip the wood more tightly, strengthening the connection between the wooden elements.
