Northern Writing Studio

In far northern Michigan, this homeowner wanted to transform a turn-of-the-century farmhouse into a retreat for writing, relaxation, and connection with family. The Writing Studio became a top priority during the pandemic in 2020—envisioned as a place to escape from the commotion of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Writing Studio features a functional layout, with a sitting area, galley kitchen, and bathroom on the main floor, while a bedroom, closet, and compact laundry area are located on the second floor.

The dark exterior is clad in black cementitious panels and Gendai® Linseed Amber yakisugi “shou sugi ban” siding, giving the studio a reserved presence within the neighborhood. The interior is filled with natural light and features a warm wood accent wall finished in Gendai® Alkyd Natural yakisugi, a polished concrete floor, and a central wood stove that balances the moodiness of the exterior.

While retaining the familiar form of the original farmhouse, the Writing Studio combines a modern aesthetic with a modest presence along the town’s main street.
