DESCRIPTION
Suyaki® yakisugi “shou sugi ban” siding. Original unbrushed charred surface, suitable for exterior applications. Leathery texture with maximum wood and color longevity, and even black color. Exterior grade finish is delicate and not suitable for high-traffic applications. This very unique material has a consumable soot layer that blemishes, weathers, and develops character over time. Suyaki uses a vernacular material and the fine patina epitomizes the traditional Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic. Delivered ready to install.
FINISH DETAILS
Tung Oil Black
Our unique tung oil blend was formulated specifically for exterior Suyaki. This oil stain penetrates and stabilizes the delicate soot layer, making it easier to handle during installation. The black pigment makes the siding very consistent in tone. The leathery texture will blemish and weather over time, and can easily be touched up as desired.
CONSIDERATIONS
- User-friendly material with a leathery surface that will patina slowly over time.
- Beware of options on the market with hard-shell coatings.
- Blemishes and soot erosion will develop over time and are the nature of this very traditional material.
- Easy touch up if scratched or scuffed.

MAINTENANCE
Suyaki has maximum color longevity, wood durability, fire resistance out of all of our products. It is a true maintenance-free siding product, but can be re-oiled every decade or two if desired to freshen up the black color. Yakisugi should never be scraped, sanded or pressure washed. A very weak TSP or soap solution, neutral pH cleaner, or simply clean water, can be applied with a cloth or soft brush to wash off pollen, dirt, dust, etc. Touch up damage such as scratches or dings, or local uneven weathering, with touch up oil. Wipe off oil residue to prevent glossy spots. Exterior siding should be hosed down regularly to keep it clean and appearance fresh. SHIPPING DETAILS
Minimum order volume is 400 square feet for the order’s first line item. Standard lead time is 2-3 weeks PO to ship-ready, then add 1-2 weeks for shipping. Please order at least 5 weeks before needed at site, and note that lead time can go up if we are oversold on specific items.
